Career Memorandum
What Is a Career Memorandum?
A Career Memorandum is a board-ready document that sets out a senior career the way a hiring committee actually assesses one. Evidence first, context stated, every claim linked to something a reader can check for themselves.
It exists because of a mismatch. The CV was built for volume screening, where somebody moves through two hundred applications in an afternoon and needs compression to do it. A board appointment is the lowest-volume hiring decision an organisation makes. A handful of people, weeks of diligence, and one choice that will be defended upwards for years. Compression is the wrong instrument for that reading, and above roughly £150,000 the damage starts to show.
I have spent thirty years on the hiring side of senior appointments. The pattern that made me build this format was watching strong records lose to weaker ones, over and over, because the stronger record had been flattened into the same vocabulary as everyone else in the pack.
The problem
What Flattening Does to a Career
Take a real shape of career. Two Section 166 remediations closed on time. Seven consecutive clean audits. £780m raised across a cycle that included a market most people had written off.
On two pages, that becomes a job title, a company name, and a line reading "led finance transformation". So does the career of somebody who ran a routine budget cycle for four years. The committee reads both lines in about the same nine seconds and cannot tell them apart, so it falls back on whatever it can distinguish, which is usually the brand of the last employer or how familiar the candidate feels.
The candidate never sees this happen. They receive a warm rejection that mentions a close decision.
The document
What the Document Contains
A Career Memorandum runs to six sections. The order matters as much as the contents, because it follows how a committee builds confidence rather than how a career happened chronologically.
The position
What this person is for, stated in commercial terms in the first viewport. Six signature numbers sit here, chosen because they are the six a chair would want before reading anything else.
The record at scale
Each significant engagement carries its mandate, the constraint that came with it, and what was delivered against both. Every number has an object attached to it, so £14m is never left floating without saying £14m of what.
The evidence
Thirty or more outbound links to sources a reader can open independently. Annual reports, regulatory filings, published research, press coverage. Nothing asks to be believed on trust.
Judgement
Decisions taken and why, including the ones that went badly and what changed afterwards. Committees weight this more heavily than candidates expect, because a record with no visible mistakes reads as either junior or edited.
The fit case
Where this person creates value, and where they do not. Naming the second half is what makes the first half credible.
Verification
How to check any of it, and who to ask.
The document is delivered as interactive HTML, keyboard-navigable, so a reader can move through it on a phone between meetings or open it on a laptop and follow the sources. Three fully worked examples sit on this site and are open to read: a Group CFO in regulated asset management, a private equity Operating Partner, and a climate scientist who moved into policy leadership.
Fit
Who It Suits, and Who It Does Not
It suits C-suite executives, board members and senior leaders whose records are verifiable, meaning the numbers exist somewhere a third party could confirm them. It suits people whose careers have become genuinely difficult to compress, which usually happens somewhere past fifteen years of senior responsibility. It suits anyone moving confidentially, because a document that survives being forwarded is worth more than a conversation that cannot be repeated.
It does not suit mid-career professionals. The format needs scale to justify itself, and below a certain level of seniority a well-built CV does the job properly. It does not suit anyone whose record cannot be evidenced, since the entire mechanism depends on a reader being able to check. If your strongest claims live only in your own account of them, the format will expose that rather than hide it.
The commission
How the Commission Works
There are three tiers. The memorandum alone costs £250. At £350 it comes with a rewritten CV and a discovery call, which is the tier most people take, and at £450 the CV is built from scratch alongside the same call.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Career Memorandum a replacement for my CV?
It replaces the CV in the situations where the CV was failing, meaning board-level conversations, headhunter relationships, and any process where somebody is doing real diligence on you. Most clients keep a CV as well, because application portals demand one. The memorandum is what travels when a person recommends you to somebody else.
How is it different from a LinkedIn profile?
A LinkedIn profile is a permanent public summary that you write yourself and aim at everybody. A Career Memorandum is a private document aimed at one decision, structured around what a specific kind of reader needs to be confident about, and evidenced in a way LinkedIn has no mechanism for.
Will a headhunter actually read a document this long?
Search consultants read long documents constantly, because that is the job. The thing that gets skimmed is a document with nothing in it. What earns the reading is verifiable specifics in the first viewport, which is why six signature numbers sit at the top.
Does it work outside finance?
The format works across sectors. One example on this site covers a career that moved from climate research into policy leadership, running a €3.2bn programme across two IPCC cycles. What the structure follows is how a committee builds confidence, rather than the conventions of any one industry.
Can I write one myself?
The structure is set out above and nothing is hidden. What is hard to do for yourself is the selection, since deciding which six numbers lead requires knowing how a committee reads, and most people over-weight what they found difficult rather than what a board finds persuasive.
What if my numbers are commercially confidential?
Most senior records contain some. The memorandum handles this by stating scale and outcome in terms that can be evidenced publicly, and holding the confidential specifics for conversation. A document that leaks confidential figures damages you with exactly the audience you are trying to reach.
How long does it take?
48 hours from receipt of your material.

See the Format the Way a Chair Would
If your career has stopped fitting on two pages, the three worked examples linked above will show you the format faster than any description. Read one the way a chair would, which means starting at the top and stopping wherever you would want proof.
